Immigration Reform/Bush Sickness Effects Brain

I believe that George W. Bush will be remembered as a great President in future years.

That being said, he does some things that are idiotic. After his trip to the G8 Summit, Bush plans to meet with GOP senators early next week in hopes of reviving the Senate Immigration Reform Bill.

I know that the President wants to add something to his resume other than the things that he has accomplished to date. Immigration Reform would be a huge plus to that end. However, as we saw this week, the American people do not want this bill. In reading opinions from both sides of the isle, most Americans would like to see that the laws that we have in place today are enforced.

A good start to this would be to finish the wall on our southern border. Once that happens, then MAYBE we can tackle the next problem.

The President and Senators Kyl, McCain and others want to talk about 'doing something' about illegal immigration. But what they don't talk about is enforcing the immigration laws currently on the books.

I agree that what we have now is de-facto amnesty. That's why I favor cutting off all social services to illegals.

This is what the Bush administration and supporters of this immigration bill refuse to see -- we don't trust them to control the borders. We don't believe that they are committed to enforcing current laws, and that the current bureaucracy set up to handle immigration is capable of processing the people currently in the system. That's why adding millions and millions of illegals to the number already being processed is a bad idea.

We are not heartless people. I personally see nothing wrong with people coming here to work who aren't citizens. But until we can control who comes into our country, we shouldn't even be considering temporary worker programs or "paths to citizenship".

I also second Kent's comment on denying social services to illegals.

I agree with you both on denying social services. I seem to recall that the voters of CA passed Prop 187 in 1994, designed to deny illegal immigrants social services, health care, and public education. But that wonderful Democrat that we had as Governor, Gray Davis, effectively killed the law.
